  • Additional Information

This exclusive special edition stamp commemorates the historic moment when the Bruges Madonna was rescued by the Monuments Men from the Altaussee salt mine. Originally released in 2016 as 'Silent Heroes - Rescue of Art Treasures, Salzkammergut 1945', the stamp was created by the Austrian Post as a tribute to the courageous miners and Monuments Men officers who helped save many valuable cultural assets from certain destruction during World War II. The front of the stamp features the iconic photo of Monuments Man Lt. Cdr. George Stout watching over Michelangelo’s Bruges Madonna as it is carefully removed from the salt mine in June 1945. All proceeds go towards supporting the Monuments Men Foundation mission.
